La barraca

La barraca tells of the rejection Batiste Borrull’s family faces when they settle in a shack on land in the Valencian market gardens, from which another family who had lived and worked there for several generations was evicted for non-payment. The local market gardeners, all tenants, seek to keep the land barren as a symbol of power over their landlords. The conflict grows in intensity until it becomes tragic. The story told in La barraca is shocking due to the topicality of its characters and their conflicts. La barraca speaks of unjustified rent increases, evictions, child harassment, and the bitter conflict between natives and immigrants.
