New York-born singer and Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell was born into musical royalty, her father, Luis Russell, a legendary pianist, composer, and musical director for Louis Armstrong. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering singer, guitarist, and bassist with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. She has toured worldwide, performing and recording with David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, The Holmes Brothers, Wynton Marsalis, and Rosanne Cash, among others, and has appeared on more than 200 chart-topping albums, including Strictly Romancin’, which won the 2012 Prix du Jazz Vocal from the French Academy of Jazz, and Bring It Back in 2014. Catherine Russell was a featured artist on a Grammy Award-winning soundtrack album for the series Boardwalk Empire. Her latest work reached number 1 on the JazzWeek chart, and her last two albums have received Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The Wall Street Journal calls Catherine Russell “one of the preeminent singers of our time.”
