La odisea según Penélope
9th International Classic Theater Festival of Alicante
In this Odyssey, Ulysses is not the protagonist, but the slaves who have accompanied Telemachus since his childhood and who are executed upon the monarch’s return, an act that goes almost unnoticed in the original Homeric text. In this version of the events of Penelope, the women recreate a kingdom free of cruelty, an ideal kingdom that fatally crumbles after the return of the monarch and the massacre of the hundred suitors. This is the version narrated by Penélope in her gyneceo, this is the version woven day by day to gain time. But this is also a version of The Odyssey of the powerless, of the collateral victims, of the different and of the misfits, all of them headed by Penelope in their different ages: from the girl kidnapped to be married by an agreement between monarchs, through the strategist who strenuously maintains the kingdom at peace during the twenty years of the war in Troy and the disappearance of Ulysses, to the old widow, forgotten and demented before the ruins of his cosmovision, defeated in his attempt that the world is not an inhospitable and bloody place. This Odyssey according to Penélope is no less epic because of that, but its epic resides in a family separated because of the war, facing itself and victim of the struggle to gain power in a country at the expense of the innocent.- Company: Theater classroom of the University of Alicante
