After a long absence for work reasons, a group of friends and co-workers return to Madrid for a short period of time. That same night a party is held in honor of the English Dragoons at the palace of the Marquis of Aguilar. All friends are invited except Carlos. Aware of the unexpected presence of an old aunt of one of his friends, Carlos bets with the rest of his friends that he will attend the party.

At the Goose Inn, opposite the palace of the courtesan Flora Goldoni, there has been talk for days of a princess who has just arrived from Rome and who is staying there following in the footsteps of Captain Leonello.
