Madama Butterfly

It tells the tragic story of Cio-Cio-San, a 15-year-old Japanese geisha who marries Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, a U.S. naval officer. While she devotes herself faithfully to him, believing in true love and abandoning her culture, he sees her as merely a temporary pastime. Pinkerton leaves Japan and, years later, returns with an American wife, prompting Butterfly’s suicide after he takes her son away.
