ALICANTE’S THEATRE PRINCIPAL COMPLETES THE AUTUMN/WINTER 2022/2023 PROGRAMME.

The Autumn/Winter season reveals a programme that includes theatre, music, circus, zarzuela, opera, magic, dance, three national premieres, shows to enjoy with the family and many more surprises.

This morning, the mayor of Culture Antonio Manresa, the territorial delegate of the Institut Valencià de Cultura in Alicante, Alicia Garijo and the deputy director of the Teatro Principal Maria Dolores Padilla have presented in the hall of the Teatro Principal of Alicante the new shows of the Program September 2022 to January 2023. The representative of Banco Sabadell apologised for not being able to attend the press conference for scheduling reasons.

The Principal is moving forward with new projects, and has presented the new image of this season in its programme, posters and banners, as well as the premiere of the new website of the Teatro Principal of Alicante. The Principal updates its website to offer the public a more accessible and intuitive responsive website in three languages, Spanish, Valencian and English. A website that aims to be easier, with clear information and simple navigation, as well as interactive.
In the words of Councillor Antonio Manresa: “a luxury programme has been presented that puts the finishing touch to an exceptional year of the Teatro Principal de Alicante in its 175th Anniversary, which advances in its national positioning for the quality of its proposals, which include all the performing arts and which support local production”.
Alicia Garijo declares: “Once again, the IVC accompanies the Teatro Principal in its season presentation. That Alicante’s cultural offer always grows is a reason for joy that we fully support from Cultura de la Generalitat.”

In the words of the Deputy Director María Dolores Padilla: “A functional tool with which we intend to inform about everything we do,” she declares about the new website presented today and highlights the inclusion of new projects with greater involvement of the Theatre in the production and new relationships with Alicante institutions. “A programme designed for all audiences in which we see all the modalities represented”.

Also new this season, the Teatro Principal is incorporating two contemporary plays selected in collaboration with the Muestra de Teatro Español de Autores Contemporáneos, which this year celebrates its XXX edition, “Los farsantes” by the renowned author Pablo Remón, who also directs it, a production of the Centro Dramático Nacional with Javier Cámara, Francesco Carril, Nuria Mencía and Marina Salas. Los farsantes is a comedy in which only four actors travel through dozens of characters, spaces and times. A satire on the world of theatre and audiovisuals, as well as a reflection on success and the roles we play, in and out of fiction.

It tells the story of two characters related to the world of cinema and theatre. Ana Velasco is an actress whose career is at a standstill. After acting in small productions of classical plays, she now works as a Pilates teacher and at weekends she plays in children’s plays. Ana is looking for the great character that will finally make her triumph.

Diego Fontana is a very successful director of commercial films who is now embarking on a big production: a series to be filmed all over the world, with international stars. An accident will cause him to face a personal crisis and rethink his career. These two characters are connected by the figure of Ana’s father, Eusebio Velasco, a cult film director in the 80s, who has disappeared and is now cut off from the world.

And “Manolita Chen, un cuento chino” by the company La Baltasara, a tribute written by José Troncoso to the famous Chinese theatre of Manolita Chen with Pepa Zaragoza, Nacho Vera, María Jáimez, Chema Noci, Isa Belui and Luigi Belui. Manolita returns to the Price to recall a glorious past that nobody remembers, from her beginnings as a Charivari in the Price Circus itself, where she also falls in love with Chen Tse-Ping, the one who will be the love of her life and with whom she will mount her famous Manolita Chen Chinese Theatre, to her hardest moments of decadence and her battle to preserve her own lost identity.

Both performances will take place on November 7th and 12th at 8.30pm and 8pm respectively, with which the Theatre inaugurates a fruitful institutional relationship with the Festival that will contribute to enriching Alicante’s cultural offer.
Also in this programme two Galas, our Gala of delivery of Premis de Teatre José Estruch on Monday 17th October with the presence of all the award winners and we have joined the Gala tribute to Pepe Espadero in his 80th tribute organised by Vicente Seva in which the City Council, the Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Jose Espadero de Alicante and the Conservatorio Superior de Danza de Alicante and dancers former members of his company collaborate.

The Principal presents its programme for this season in which we will find theatre, circus, zarzuela, music, dance, opera and shows for the whole family.

In October, the dance show “Entre hilos y huesos”, by DDCdanza Daniel Doña, will be added to the programme on Friday 28th at 20.30h. With Jordi Vilaseca and Daniel Doña as stage directors, with live music and singing.

Entre hilos y huesos, the latest choreographic imaginary of the company DDCdanza directed by the dancer and choreographer Daniel Doña, moves and shakes the most recent historical memory of our country with a syncretic, feminist and unprejudiced vision that transforms suffering, fear and tragedy into a song of freedom. Entre hilos y huesos is a complaint and denunciation, poetic justice expressed through an avant-garde dance that moves through tradition and contemporaneity.

We continue with the November programme with music. On Thursday 10 November at 8.30 pm “Totally Tina”, by Planeta Fama. With Justine Riddoch as Tina and musical direction by Corin Handley.

Can you imagine being able to relive a concert of the queen of rock and soul and enjoy live songs like “Simply The Best”, “Private Dancer” or “What’s Love got to do with it”? Recognised on several occasions by the Association of UK Agents as the best tribute to Tina Turner, a show that has triumphed all over the world is coming to Spain. A great success that is due above all to the voice of Justine Riddoch, a realistic sound, a team of professional dancers who recreate the original choreographies and a wardrobe that faithfully reproduces the dresses that Turner wore.

We continue with more theatre. On Sunday 13 November at 6pm comes “El peligro de las buenas compañías”, by Javier Gomá. Directed by Juan Carlos Rubio and Fernando Cayo, the cast includes Carmen Conesa, Ernesto Arias and Miriam Montilla.

Lola and Julia, two sisters and their husbands Tristán and Félix are the main characters. Tristán, a prestigious lawyer, about to reach the peak of his professional career, enters into a severe marital crisis due to the perverse effects of the mere family proximity of his brother-in-law, Félix, an unblemished, kind, helpful, sincerely tender individual, with whom he is compared more than he would like because the incessant comparison only brings him a copious rain of reproaches. It is these inevitable comparisons, then, that arouse Tristan’s intense resentment.

We continue with lots of humour. On Friday 18 at 20.30h MPC Management presents “Ahora o nunca”, by Danna and Maribe Ponce. Maribe and Danna Ponce, content creators and YouTubers, are here to tell us from their most personal experiences, how they managed to fulfil their dream and overcome the fear of failure. Experiences, decisions, leaps into the void, uncertainty, failures and successes. The road to happiness can be a roller coaster. And you, do you dare to dream?

On Saturday 19 November at 8 p.m. comes the play “Otra Vida”, by Oriol Tarrason. With Beatriz Carvajal, Beatriz Arjona, Juan Fernández and Juan Gea in the cast.

She is seventy years old and her name is Marta. But she never liked that name. From today she will be called Solange. Determined to change her life, she sets out to convince Ernesto and Mateo, her old and apathetic friends, that the three of them still have a lot to live for. Solange’s desire to start a new life will end up provoking a lot of absurd and funny situations that will transform our protagonists forever. But starting a new life won’t be as easy as she thinks.

It’s the turn of the zarzuela. On Sunday 20 at 6 pm Materlírica España brings us “Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente”. An emblematic work of Madrid’s género chico. In a joyful summer atmosphere, the dalliances of an ex-minister’s son with a corny, poor girl alternate with the love affairs between Pepa and Manuela, two water carriers who have shared two boyfriends, Lorenzo and Vicente. Madrid’s grace and charm, sparkling castilianism.

This season also includes opera. To end November, on Wednesday 30th at 20.30 h the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opera Company L.G Artist Management brings us “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini.

Tosca is considered one of the most representative operas of the Italian verismo repertoire, for its dramatic intensity and for containing some of the most beautiful arias in the repertoire. The plot combines love, intrigue, violence, passion and death.

We begin December with more theatre. On Friday 2 at 8 pm comes “Decadencia”, by Steven Berkoff. Adapted by Benjamín Prado, directed by Pedro Casablanc and with Maru Valdivielso and Pedro Casablanc in the cast.
Berkoff, decadence, and dancing. Her and him. And the other one. And another. Or are they themselves and others at the same time? Subverted in a transvestite game of obscene and painful, impertinent and promiscuous personalities. They, predators and decadents: The dance of sexualising and aristocratic eroticism. The well of snobbery. The secular ordeal of offensive and domineering trifle. Two sinewy souls, playing the satanic or human or divine game of seduction, horror, humiliation, the elegant or terrifying somatic dance, the purr that smells of procacity.

On Saturday 3 December at 8 p.m. Okapi Producciones brings us the play “Muerte de un viajante” by Arthur Miller. Directed by Rubén Szuchmacher, adapted by Natalio Grueso and with Imanol Arias, Cristina de Inza, Andreas Muñoz, Daniel Ibáñez, Fran Calvo, Miguel Uribe and Virginia Flores in the cast.

Willy Loman is a travelling salesman who has given all his effort and his professional career to the company he works for. His only objective is to give a better life to his family, his wife and two children, who adore him and to whom he wants to instil the ambition to succeed and progress up the social ladder. A tireless worker, he is now sixty-three years old, exhausted and worn out after a life without rest, and he sees his position in the company faltering. His sales are no longer what they used to be and his productivity plummets, causing his relationship with his bosses to become untenable.

On Thursday 8th at 12 noon we will enjoy with the family “Campanilla, Una aventura musical”, by Rubén Yuste. Mundo Imaginarius brings us this family musical that has 11 nominations at the Broadway World Spain Awards and 10 nominations at the Musical Theatre Awards.

Tinkerbell and her friends, Fania, Iris and Dilia, are weakening and losing their powers. The fairy dust is disappearing and they don’t have the strength to build spring in time. The magic Saucum tree, which provided the fairy dust, is completely dried up and the children have stopped believing in them. Tinkerbell and her friends, together with Master Oifrag and his assistant Benshee, will have to find a solution to travel to the real world and find the humans so that they will believe again.

The new programme also includes magic shows, on Saturday 10th at 8 p.m. and on Sunday 11th at 6 p.m. Jandro arrives with his show “Descabellado”.

What do Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Jennifer Lawrence, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, Jessica Chastain, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have in common? They have all been thrilled and surprised by Jandro in El Hormiguero. Feel like these Hollywood celebrities and enjoy his magic and humour live. Different, fun, original, modern and surprising. No camera tricks, no sidekicks and no hair on your head.

We continue the month of December with “El lago de los cisnes”, the most popular ballet in history. It comes to the Principal on Thursday 15 December at 8.30 pm with the Ballet de Cuba, directed by Laura Alonso. Patricia Hernández Ortega, Abraham Lázaro Quiñones González and a corps de ballet with a total of 35 dancers will give life to this classic choreographed by M. Petipa.

We continue with more ballet, in this case with “El Cascanueces” on Friday 16th at 20.30 h, also with the Ballet de Cuba. “El Cascanueces” is a story about the birth of first love and the discovery of the enormous world of experiences and feelings. The spectators admire the courage of the Nutcracker-Prince, who defeats the army of the treacherous Mouse King, the kindness and courage of little Maria, who sees in the wooden doll Nutcracker the noble and daring Prince, the wonderful world of miracles and transformations.

We close the month of December with a new children’s show. On Saturday 17th at 16.30h and 19h Cantajuegos presents “VIVA MI PLANETA! Puedes, tú puedes”, his new show. A creative and entertaining story where the Cantajuegos, the audience and the kids’ favourite characters will perform the musical hits of the most successful children’s group of the last decades. On this occasion, an original and novel competition will inspire us to work as a team to overcome difficulties and win a valuable prize through music, play and laughter.

January begins as it does every year with the “Gran concierto de año nuevo”, a traditional New Year’s concert in true Austrian style. The concert will take place on Sunday 1 at 19 h.

The Moldovan Philharmonic Orchestra based in Chisinau was founded eighty-five years ago, which makes it one of the oldest musical institutions in Moldova and makes it a repository of Moldovan cultural, classical and folk heritage. The orchestra is made up of teachers, graduates of musical academies and conservatories in Moldova, Ukraine and Russia. And as special guests, tenor Jesús Álvarez and soprano Aurora Peña.

In a very attractive format, they offer a review of their entire career and their most important songs. Cuéntame un cuento, 20 de abril or La senda del tiempo, among many others, cannot be missing in their fantastic repertoire.

Next Friday 13 January at 20.30h Avanti Teatro, Concha Busto Producciones, Teatros del Canal and 16 Escalones bring us the play “El síndrome del copiloto”, by Vanessa Montfort. With Cuca Escribano and Miguel Ángel Muñoz in the cast.

Marina, a woman alone in the middle of the Mediterranean on a sailboat that does not know how to sail, Oscar’s boat. She has to fulfil her last wish: to cross the Strait of Gibraltar and dump her ashes in Tangiers. During this great eight-day maritime adventure, our heroine will have to overcome many trials: relive her love story with the memory of Oscar who is travelling with her and, the greatest danger of all, recover her dreams and the helm of her own life. This exciting adaptation of the best-seller “Women who buy flowers” is heir to the spirit of “The Old Man and the Sea”, “The Odyssey” and “Five Hours with Mario”.

On Wednesday 18th at 21h comes “Hija de la luna”, the best tribute to MECANO. With Robin Torres as singer. A show based on the most important and best-selling album in the history of MECANO, Descanso Dominical, which will transport you for one night to one of their massive concerts in which thousands of souls sang every one of their songs. A night for a reunion with those who shared this magical time with you.

We continue with more ballet, next Thursday 19th at 20,30 h the International Classical Ballet brings us “La bella durmiente”, with more than 40 artists. Carmela and Paulino are two revue actors who, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, perform in Republican Spain. Due to a mistake they cross the lines and are taken prisoner by the Francoists. The Francoists order them to perform a show for their troops, which includes a parody against the Republic, to make fun of the international brigaders who are to be shot. Carmela, outraged, spontaneously subverts the parody, despite the desperate attempts of the timid Paulino, and ends up being shot as well. Paulino is left alone and has no consolation but to get drunk and receive visits from Carmela’s spirit.

Another zarzuela is added to the new programme. In this case, the Compañía Lírica Alicantina within the V Residencia de Lírica Maestro Chapí presents “La Viejecita y La Canción del Olvido” with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Vinalopó on Sunday 22nd January at 18h.
